The Barrows Company was founded in 1966 as an outgrowth of work done at that time on NASA’s Biosatellite project. A non-exclusive U.S. Government patent on our Implantable Transmitter technology was applied for and granted to us at that time. Based on our own research and on feedback from our customers, we have refined our manufacturing and encapsulation techniques over the years. As a result, our transmitters’ temperature-sensing electronic modules are virtually impervious to body fluids for implantation periods in excess of 18 months.

Our Product Design Philosophy

From the start, it was clear that to study an unrestrained animal is to do better science. Implantable radio telemetry offers researchers a unique opportunity to measure physiological parameters such as body temperature and activity without tethering and hard-wiring the animal to instrumentation. It also allows the subjects to be treated humanely and with respect.

Obviously, the longer the life of the telemetry implant, the less frequently surgery needs to be done. Hence, trauma to the research animals is again minimized and longer-term studies can be accomplished.

Our receiver/demodulators are sensitive and easy to set up, simplifying configuration and maintenance issues.
